A hard frost across the sloping garden and the wooded valley beyond, on a clear morning at the end of December.

Location

Widworthy · East Devon National Landscape

Secluded and sheltered, at the end of a no-through road, in a hidden valley among the rolling hills and wooded coombes of the East Devon National Landscape.

Close by is the pretty fourteenth-century church of Widworthy, dedicated to St Cuthbert, and the village of Wilmington a mile and a half away, with its public house and village hall. The bustling market town of Honiton, under five miles off, has a wide range of amenities including a swimming pool and leisure centre, as well as a mainline station on the London Waterloo line.

Within easy reach is the World Heritage Jurassic Coast — Lyme Regis with its famous Cobb and sandy beach, or Sidmouth with its cinema and Waitrose. For all the seclusion, the roads out are good: the A30 and A303 to London and the motorway network, and Tiverton Parkway for the mainline service to Paddington.

Finding it

The last mile

From Honiton take the A35 east. At Wilmington, turn right at the Home Farm Hotel, signposted Widworthy Church. Take the next left, pass the church, and continue to the end of the lane — a little over a mile.

The lane goes no further.
